How Can Our Students Be Relevant For Today’s Restructured Patient Documentation Market?
Panel Members:
Carol Gilbert, GMTS, Inc
Deb Nickens, Orlando Health
Dale Kivi, FutureNet Technologies Corporation
Panelist will be discussing: (1) Why the MT profession is still a good career choice. (2) What types of non-production jobs are available with my MT Education? (3) What skill sets are necessary now to encompass the current market and how will the MT profession be different in 5 years?

Teaching Your Students to Succeed Beyond the Classroom
Speaker: Linda Allard, New England Medical Transcription
Your transcription students may type a mile a minute, but if they haven't learned professional etiquette, they may never get the chance to prove it. MTs who work from home often make common mistakes when applying for jobs: they send in unprofessional resumes, don't submit the required paperwork after they are offered a position or they are impolite to recruiters when the hiring process doesn't run fast enough. Learn what professional skills recruiters are looking for and how to help teach them to your students.

The State of the Profession
Panel Members:
Shaw Rietkerk, M*Modal
Jane Bates, Amphion
Cindy Richardson, ASTAT
Sandy Shumaker, CMT, AHDI-F, Shumaker Transcription
Educators will hear from a panelist of employers about their take on the healthcare documentation industry, where it’s going, and how educators can adapt their teachings to best prepare future healthcare documentation specialists for a successful career in this changing industry.

Transcription-Coding Mash-up
Speaker: Jennifer Della'Zanna, MFA, CMT, CPC, CGSC, CEHRS
We have known for a long time that transcriptionists are part of the revenue process. It's not so evident to those outside MT, because it's the billing department with their fingers on *those* keys! Both coders and MTs must realize that technology is moving at a faster pace than it ever has. We must do more than adapt to emerging models. We must stay ahead of the curve to actively move the field in directions that will best serve the most important people in this equation-patients.

Coding has been the go-to idea for what MTs can do to increase their visible worth to the office, but this class is not just a mash-up of transcription and coding education as theory. This class will be a unique mix of discourse and discussion. I want your input and questions as instructors in this field to guide a meaningful discussion of the possibilities, the barriers to acceptance, and maybe some ideas nobody has ever thought of before to inspire all of us to be leaders in the process of pushing the health information field forward to the future!

Learning Objectives:

1. Discover what we can do, as educators, to prepare students for the newest trends in the industry.
2. Decide what we must do to prepare ourselves to teach these new skills.
3. Discuss how we can combine transcription and coding education to create a new form of health information specialist.
